Hosting for the Holidays? 7 Easy Ways to Get Your Baton Rouge Home Guest-Ready

The holidays are here, which means family, friends, good food…and suddenly noticing every little thing around your house that you've been meaning to tackle all year.

If you're hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even a casual holiday get-together, here's the good news: your home doesn't have to be perfect to feel welcoming.

Some of the best holiday memories happen in homes that feel comfortable, lived-in, and full of personality... not perfectly styled.

So before you start adding a dozen projects to your to-do list, here are seven simple ways to get your home guest-ready without completely stressing yourself out.

1. Start With the Spaces Your Guests Will Actually See

You don't have to organize every closet before company arrives!

Focus your energy on the spaces where everyone will spend the most time:

  • Entryway

  • Living room

  • Kitchen

  • Dining area

  • Guest bathroom

Declutter countertops, put away the everyday odds and ends, and give those spaces a good cleaning.

And yes, you officially have my permission to close the doors to the rooms nobody needs to see.

2. Give Your Entryway a Little Love

Your front door is your home's first impression, so make it feel welcoming.

It doesn't take much. A fresh doormat, seasonal wreath, a few potted plants, or some simple greenery can completely transform your entrance.

And since we're in Louisiana, there's a pretty good chance guests will spend some time outside, too. Give the porch and patio a quick clean and make sure your outdoor lighting is working.

3. Create a Cozy Atmosphere

This is one of my favorite parts.

You don't have to completely redecorate your home for the holidays. A few thoughtful touches can make everything feel warmer.

Try adding:

  • Throw blankets

  • Seasonal pillows

  • Candles

  • Greenery

  • Lamps instead of overhead lighting

  • A simple centerpiece

  • A holiday scent

Lighting especially makes a huge difference. Warm lamps and candles can instantly make a room feel more inviting.

4. Make the Kitchen Work for You

We all know where everyone eventually ends up during a party: the kitchen.

Before hosting, clear as much unnecessary clutter off your countertops as possible. You'll appreciate having the extra prep and serving space once guests arrive.

Think about traffic flow, too. Creating a separate drink station or appetizer area can keep everyone from gathering directly in front of the oven while you're trying to finish dinner!

5. Don't Forget the Guest Bathroom

This is one of those little details guests notice.

Give your guest bathroom a quick refresh with:

  • Fresh hand towels

  • Extra toilet paper that's easy to find

  • Hand soap

  • A candle or diffuser

  • A clean mirror

  • A small seasonal touch

Nothing complicated - just clean, stocked, and welcoming.

6. Prepare for Louisiana Weather

Holiday weather around Baton Rouge can be a little unpredictable.

One Thanksgiving we're wearing sweaters. The next we're wondering why we bothered putting them on.

If your gathering may spill outside, have a backup plan. Clean the patio, check your outdoor seating, and consider having a few fans or heaters available depending on what Louisiana decides to give us that day.

7. Remember What Actually Matters

Here's your reminder that your guests aren't coming over to inspect your baseboards.

They're coming to see you.

They're coming to eat, laugh, catch up, watch the kids play, tell the same family stories you've heard a hundred times, and make memories together.

So fluff the pillows. Light the candle. Put something delicious in the oven.

Then enjoy your home.

Because at the end of the day, a beautiful house is wonderful... but it's the people and memories inside of it that truly make it feel like home.

Happy holidays, Baton Rouge!
